Initial results of NEXT-DEMO, a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 experiment
2013
NEXT-DEMO is a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 detector, an electroluminescent time projection chamber that will search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Xe-136 using 100-150 kg of enriched xenon gas. NEXT-DEMO was built to prove the expected performance of NEXT-100, namely, energy resolution better than 1% FWHM at 2.5MeV and event topological reconstruction. In this paper we describe the prototype and its initial results. A resolution of 1.75% FWHM at 511 keV (which extrapolates to 0.8% FWHM at 2.5 MeV) was obtained at 10 bar pressure using a gamma-ray calibration source. Also, a basic study of the event topology along the longitudinal coordinate is presented, proving that it…
Radiopurity control in the NEXT-100 double beta decay experiment: procedures and initial measurements
2013
[EN] The "Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon Time-Projection Chamber" (NEXT) is intended to investigate the neutrinoless double beta decay of Xe-136, which requires a severe suppression of potential backgrounds. An extensive screening and material selection process is underway for NEXT since the control of the radiopurity levels of the materials to be used in the experimental set-up is a must for rare event searches. First measurements based on Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry and gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low background germanium detectors at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (Spain) are described here. Activity results for natural radioactive chains and other common radionucl…
Statistical analysis of β decays and the effective value of gA in the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation framework
2016
We perform a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) statistical analysis of a number of measured groundstate-to-ground-state single β+/electron-capture and β− decays in the nuclear mass range of A = 62–142. The corresponding experimental comparative half-lives (log f t values) are compared with the theoretical ones obtained by the use of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with G-matrixbased effective interactions. The MCMC analysis is performed separately for 47 isobaric triplets and 28 more extended isobaric chains of nuclei to extract values and uncertainties for the effective axial-vector coupling constant gA in nuclear-structure calculations performed in the p…
Transport of recoil atoms in a stream of liquid-air-cooled pure helium
1974
Abstract Pure commercial helium cooled down to the temperature of liquid air (80 K) has been used for rapid transportation of recoil atoms over distances as long as 10 m. Transport efficiencies of several tens of per cent have been obtained for recoil atoms resulting from alpha decay or from decay by fission. The angle of divergence of the beam of recoil atoms at the exit of the transport capillary is measured to be (11±2)° for particles of mass number A = 211. Experimental results are discussed in terms of thermal diffusion. The elimination of carrier vapors will probably simplify the use of the helium-jet technique in on-line mass separators.
Shape coexistence in odd-mass Au isotopes: Determination of the excitation energy of the lowest intruder state in ^{179}Au
2011
Abstract Phenomenon of the shape coexistence has been investigated in 17979Au100. This very neutron-deficient isotope, 18 neutrons away from the stable gold isotope 19779Au118, was studied by a combination of α-decay and isomer-decay spectroscopy employing the ritu gas-filled separator and the great focal-plane spectrometer at the University of Jyvaskyla. A new isomer with t 1 / 2 = 328 ( 2 ) ns was observed and states associated with π d 3 / 2 − 1 , π s 1 / 2 − 1 , π f 7 / 2 + 1 and π h 9 / 2 + 1 structures were revealed. The implications of these results on the systematics of π h 9 / 2 + 1 and π f 7 / 2 + 1 intruder structures in the odd-mass gold isotopes are discussed. The minimum of th…
α decay studies of the nuclidesU218andU219
2007
Very neutron deficient uranium isotopes were produced in fusion evaporation reactions using $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ ions on $^{182}\mathrm{W}$ targets. The gas-filled recoil separator RITU was employed to collect the fusion products and to separate them from the scattered beam and other reaction products. The activities were implanted into a position sensitive silicon detector after passing through a gas-counter system. The isotopes were identified using spatial and time correlations between the implants and the decays. Two $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decaying states, with ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=(8612\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}9)$ keV and ${T}_{1/2}=(0.{51}_{\ensuremath{-}0.10}^{+0.17})$ ms for t…
The CRATI project: New insights on the consolidation of saltweathered stone and the case study of San Domenico Church in Cosenza (South Calabria, Ita…
2019
This paper presents the results of a laboratory experimentation carried out on stone materials in the framework of the CRATI project (Knowledge and Restoration through Advanced Integrated Technologies) aimed at testing new products with consolidating properties by means of an integrated methodological approach. After the preliminary characterization of stone materials collected in the pilot site, the second stage of the activities within the project were focused on the formulation and testing of products for the conservation of the same materials against decay, especially salt crystallization, one of the most aggressive and common degrading processes. The San Domenico Church, located in the…
Time-Resolved Luminescence Characteristics of Cerium Doped YAG Nanocrystals
2007
Time-resolved luminescence characteristics have been studied for cerium doped YAG nanopowders (NP) and nanostructured ceramics (NC). The results obtained have been compared to the luminescence characteristics for the well studied YAG:Ce3+ single crystal (SC). It was detected that the luminescence decay kinetics of Ce3+ related emission in nanocrystals can be closely approximated by two exponents, whereas a single exponential decay was observed in the single crystal. It was also found that the luminescence decay time and light yield of Ce3+ emission are strongly dependent on the cerium concentration and an unusual concentration quenching of Ce3+ emission was observed in YAG nanocrystals. The…
Simultaneous detection of tissue autofluorescence decay distribution and time-gated photo-bleaching rates
2015
ABSTRACT Experimental methodology for parallel measurements of in-vivo skin autofluorescence (AF) lifetimes and photo-bleaching dynamic has been developed and tested. The AF lifetime decay distributio ns were periodically collected from fixed tissue area with subsequent detection of the fluorescence intensity decrease dynamic at different time gates after the pulse excitation. Temporal distributions of human in-vivo skin AF lifetimes and bleaching kinetics were collected and analyzed by means of commercial time-corr elated single photon counting system. Keywords: TCSPC, skin autofluoresc ence, and photo-bleaching. 1. INTRODUCTION Laser induced time-resolved autofluorescence (AF) spectroscop…
